“As the world changed, and continues to change, with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are forced to engage with a new world that is both familiar and unfamiliar. Many of our surroundings, daily routines and interactions with others have become somewhat strange. These times have encouraged and enabled a period of reflection and introspection. Collectively, we have had more time to consider our own place in the world as our experience has narrowed.

I have created a self-portrait that echoes these ideas, blending aesthetic accuracy with a disjointed, dissolving form: the familiar and the unfamiliar. In a nod to my artistic practice I have recorded this hybridised representation on a discarded piece of courier packaging. This is a reminder of a time when the world was more predictable, operating, for the most part, as expected.” - Damien Veal
