“This assemblage piece, Persephone, was created for an exhibition that was cancelled due to the pandemic.

It was created with no intended symbolism or story line, though I find one always emerges as the creative process evolves, sometimes it is revealed even after it is created, after a bit of time has passed, upon reflection.

Like the goddess herself, Persephone spent many months in the cold underworld (my dark and lonely studio shelf) waiting to be reborn into the world of the living (post pandemic). She wears authentic 1800's American dress remnants, saved from a garment worn by souls long gone from this earth, her friends in the underworld. The butterfly helps her travel between worlds and the antique Czech button is a symbol of the pomegranate seeds that sealed her fate.

This piece is a reminder that as the earth turns, nothing is stagnant. The cycles of life are always fluctuating and even if it seems dark and never-ending right now, change is imminent and there is always going to be sunshine when we re-emerge from the darkness.” - Lucia Mocnay
