PAST EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS

‘Art in Iso’ A group exhibition to bring us all together.

The creative industry has been one of the most heavily affected by the impacts of Covid 19. With exhibitions cancelled, projects postponed and galleries closing due to the economic pressures, there has been no greater time to support the arts. For many artists, the uncertainty and isolation has been a roller coaster of emotions and productivity.

Yet we have all have found a way to persevere, as that is what the creative spirit does. Art helps us make sense of the world.

This virtual exhibition features work created; prior to the pandemic (but never shown due to the above mentioned rescheduling), during the months of isolation and lockdown, as well as pieces created since, in a response to the shared experience and ongoing impacts of the pandemic.
Each artist has accompanied their piece with a short blurb to give context to their work.

Exhibition on display at The Stockroom Gallery until September 27th 2020.
Made possible and proudly supported by City of Yarra.

'No more suckers' is the latest work by Bendigo street artist, Mr Dimples.

The artist uses his distinctive style and iconic characters, to convey a story of events or people in his life. His art has always come from an emotional experience, whether happy, angry or frustrated. Influenced by the song “No More Suckers” from Marina, he has captured the highs and lows of everyday life, where he paints the loss of friendships, frustrations of dating, regaining confidence in himself and his art. This exhibition shows the transition of his low periods but finishes with high, finding acceptance in the situation and embracing life’s challenges.

Mr Dimples’ art was born, one night in the summer of 2012. After a few scary experiences of an intruder hanging around his house, causing many sleepless nights. To overcome this he created his first “Mr Dimples” works. Since then he has been an active artist who has exhibited numerous times, produced several murals and constantly adds to the growing street art scene in Bendigo and Melbourne.

In this new body of work by Melbourne-based artist Jeremy Piert, ‘The Night Garden’ - a world of icons and totems, myths and fables - exists as a place created of and drawn from the artist’s experience of fatherhood. What was once an insular world for one has expanded to produce its own mythos; a self-sustaining universe that sits beyond his consciousness. A world filled with both darkness and colour, where deities dance freely with the Lorax.

‘When I was 16 some stoners from my high school burnt down our local shopping centre and I realised that I was trapped inside my body until something killed me.’

To experience Thanatophobia is to be overwhelmed by a morbid dread of dying. Sydney-based Queer portraiture and performance artist Tom Christophersen presents his debut solo exhibition, and first exhibition in Melbourne, exploring the artist’s long-running anxieties pertaining to death.

Part Australian-gothic sentimentalia; part haunted special-edition ‘Tazo’, Thanatophobia is a chilling but camp affair from one of Australia’s most exciting up-and-coming legendary children - listed by Beautiful Bizarre Magazine as one of the world's fifty best figurative artists.

The portrait exhibition boasts a new collection of autobiographical works dealing with the many different ways we can die without dying, ideas of personal legacy, disguise and the accidental canonisation of our personal demons whilst attempting to fix ourselves before we perish.

Opening Night Thursday 28th November from 6 - 8pm at The Stockroom Gallery, 355A Wellington St, Clifton Hill

Exhibition runs from 28th November - 8th December

Inspired by the classic novel ‘The Secret Garden’ this exhibition explores the connection between the health of the human mind and wellbeing with our surrounding spaces and environments.

With the alarming deterioration of our environments, many species are threatened as their natural habitats are destroyed or disrupted. The Secret Garden is a tale spun around the power of kindness and love, painting powerful imagery of the damage that neglect and selfishness can produce.

‘SANCTUARY’ brings together a small group of local artists exploring the idea of how inextricably linked we are with our environments.

Featuring work by Jenny Allnutt - Nicole Black - Brian Cheung - Lauren Guymer - Sarah Jane Lightfoot - Mosessa - Rachael Ogle - Amanda Peluso and Alex Saba (Lucid Art).

Opening Friday the 15th of November from 6-8pm
Exhibition runs until November 24th

"Cabinets of curiosities (also known in German loanwords as Kunstkabinett, Kunstkammer or Wunderkammer; also Cabinets of Wonder, and wonder-rooms) were notable collections of objects. The term cabinet originally described a room rather than a piece of furniture. Modern terminology would categorize the objects included as belonging to natural history (sometimes faked), geology, ethnography, archaeology, religious or historical relics, works of art (including cabinet paintings), and antiquities" - Wikipedia

This Halloween The Stockroom Gallery is excited to host a celebration of all things wondrous in it's first 'Cabinet of Curiosities' exhibition. Featuring an array of works from local and international artists over a range of media including painting, sculpture and taxidermy.

“If a straight horizontal thread… falls from a height… onto a horizontal plane twisting as it pleases, it creates a new image” - Marcel Duchamp

Inspired by the temporal thinking of the cubists, futurists and surrealists of the 20th century Glen has created a body of work that explores the notion that a single instant in time can form the foundation of something much larger and often unexpected.

In life just as in the creation of these works, simple decisions and the repetition of daily habits and actions can lead to larger consequences within the flow of time. The foundations of the compositions in Glen’s work emerge from dropping lengths of string, and found objects like paint lids and irregular scraps of Dodgy Paper onto the working surfaces and preserving the random patterns created as new and unique forms. Life and structure emerges chaotically around these random encounters and each is filled with scenes inspired by memories of the past, observations of the present, and imaginations of possible futures.

The Body of work in Glen Downey’s 4D is a study of our place in the natural world as individuals, the frantic divergent focus of our modern lives, and the consequences of the brief instant in history that we all occupy as time flows ever forward.

Join us at The Stockroom Gallery, from 6-8pm on September 20th to see these works together for the first time and to celebrate a collection of moments to take forward as memories into the future thanks to Gage Roads Brewing Co and The Arts Hole Studio. Exhibition runs until September 29th

Natalie Martin’s latest body of work ‘Breathe’ explores what happens when we slow down, breathe deeply and reconnect with the natural environment. When standing still in nature there’s a curious balance of serenity and abundant energy. A sense of calmness overcomes and life leaps into full focus. All the while being surrounded by constant movement, breeze rustling leaves, birds flitting here and there

Martin depicts these moments when the world slows down. What would have been a fleeting second gets drawn out, one breath. Birds that typically never stop twitching and moving are still. Foliage and blooms are caught in time. Life is frozen in motion.

Martin spends a lot of time outdoors soaking up the colours in light and shade, the unique shapes, the layers, the birdlife, the energy circulating. She uses an interplay of refined details and loose expressive brushstrokes to build her watercolour works. Negative space grants the subject room to breathe. Her use of colour is playful and unexpected, creating a liveliness in the work. She likes to push the boundaries of typical Australian colours.

This is Martin’s first solo exhibition in Melbourne, having exhibited in Sydney and Geelong previously as well as numerous group exhibitions.

Opening night Friday 6th September from 6 - 8pm at The Stockroom Gallery, 355A Wellington St Clifton Hill
With refreshments provided by Gage Roads Brewing Co.

Exhibition runs 5th - 15th September
Gallery open Thursday to Sunday 11-6pm

#MYSOULISBUTANALGORITHM

#MYSOULISBUTANALGORITHM by Jason Parker

Jason's new body of work speaks of the uncertainty of our future, the changing face of humanity and the world, yet is still grounded in tradition. These works seek to visualize what Jason considers to be our current state: people decoupled from nature, traversing a rapidly changing world proliferated by our desire to push forth no matter what.

From afar the works appear fairly representational, depicting both figures and floral/faunal elements. It is only on closer inspection that one begins to see just how much the motifs have shifted into the realm of abstraction, and fragmentation, and are of an unsettled state. Figures seem perturbed, overcome and struggle to retain their balance in the world around them.
All lines have been blurred and it becomes apparent that the reality that has been depicted is one that has been heavily synthesized. Much as the world around us continues to become.

We exist between two worlds: one that we have harmed greatly and one that we desire to bring about. For right now we are in a state of afflux; whether towards doomsday or eutopia it is too soon to tell.

Official opening 23rd August from 6pm - 8pm at The Stockroom Gallery, 355A Wellington St Clifton Hill Vic

For his first solo show Priest brings his work from the street to canvas, with the bold and colourful style that he has become known for distilled into the collection. Priest’s cartoonish references embody his characteristic form, while his choice of subject matter extends this sense of humour and irony. In keeping with the cartoon genre, the show aims to be universally accessible - a vibrant study of the comedy and contradictions that arise in the transition from childhood, through adolescence and into adulthood.

Fresh from a year assisting Rone on Empire, Priest was inspired to put together his own body of work. Titled Toys, the exhibition is a darkly comical exploration of the changing meaning of ‘play’ across the course of our development.

The use of pastel and primary colours evoke a childhood setting but the palette quickly gives way to a far less innocent subject matter. Across the mediums of screen print, sculpture and more traditional compositional paintings, the show combines nostalgia and humour to examine the many stages of life.

Opening Friday 9th August from 6-8pm
The Stockroom Gallery - 355 Wellington st, Clifton Hill

Marcia Kings '365 days of crap' project saw the artist create an image each day for a whole year on Who Gives A Crap toilet paper wrapping. Each individual piece is then arranged to make up a whole artwork... this exhibition will showcase those works.

"The project is about reusing and recycling. It's about seeking our different drawing mediums and surfaces and not being restricted to more traditional material. It's about drawing just because you love to draw and eliminating the need for perfection where I can draw expressively, quickly and freely which plays into the name on the wrappers of 'who gives a crap'."

Come and see this wonderful collection of works and meet the artist on Saturday 29th June from 6-8pm at The Stockroom Gallery (355A Wellington st, Clifton Hill, Victoria)

Exhibition runs from 27th June to 7th July
Open Thursday to Sunday 11-6pm

Vivarium brings together Melbourne street art group, The Ninjas - a loose gathering of artists from a variety of backgrounds and art practices. Each artist has contributed to shaping the visual landscape of Melbourne's streets and laneways in one way or another through the placement of their artwork.

Founded four years ago by street artist Akemi Ito, The Ninjas street art group has brought together an eclectic mix of personalities and art practices: aerosol and mural art, fine art, sculpture, paste-ups, and installation art.
The Ninjas meet regularly to work together in nominated Melbourne laneways. The artistic group model that the Ninjas subscribe to enables a place of support, acceptance and friendship.

Vivarium, in Latin, means “place of life”. It is an area, usually enclosed in glass, for keeping or raising animals or plants for observation. In this case, we consider the vivarium to be the art gallery, and the art – which has a life of its own – to be under observation by those who visit.

Vivarium will feature new artworks by street artists Akemi, Barek, Calm, Drasko, Gigi Gordes, Manda Lane, Mr Dimples, N2o, OSNO, Phoenix, Sarah Randall, Tinky and vInk.

Deb is one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists, with an art career spanning over 2 decades.

Originally from Melbourne, now California based, her instantly recognisable fine art and murals can be found across Australia, the USA and beyond. Deb works with many different materials and surfaces, from aerosols on the street and selected interiors, to acrylics, oils & gouache on wood or canvas, digital design, illustration and sculpture.

This May, The Stockroom Gallery is pleased to host a solo exhibit of Deb’s work. Celebrating her diverse career, the show will include a range of newly painted works alongside a carefully curated selection of vintage artworks and sketches.

This exhibition is also a celebration of Deb’s strength and resilience, after she suffered a major head trauma in 2016.
Whilst her road to recovery has been a hard one and still ongoing, being able to continue to create has helped her heal. This solo show is Debs first since the trauma and is a major milestone for career.

Opening night May 3rd from 6-9pm
The Stockroom Gallery, 355A Wellington st Clifton Hill
Exhibition runs from 3rd-12th May, gallery open Thursday to Sunday 11-6pm

The general public will also be given a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with the artist as the gallery transforms into an open studio in a rare behind the scenes in to Debs process. For the week prior to her show The Stockrooms front gallery will become a space for Deb to create and connect with her fans. Exact dates and times will be announced closer to the show via @Deb on Instagram.

‘Forever home’ - solo exhibition by 23rd Key.

‘Forever home’ marks the fourth solo show for 23rd Key, it explores some of the themes developed in prior shows, but centres more around housing. It questions the idea we associate with Heritage themes in Australia and the value we put on heritage housing and buildings.

This show explores the memories we associate with ‘home’ and the nostalgia we feel, for the idea of a ‘forever home’. It exemplifies different representations of style and layouts that we are drawn to in Australian architecture. ‘Forever Home’ is a creative catalog of works that sets out to test and explore the iconography and symbolism of what makes a house a home.
